The UMKC Dental School offers inexpensive dental care for those without insurance and the flexibility to spend 3-4 hours at an appointment. 

Morning (9am) and afternoon (1pm) appointments available daily and emergency walk-ins are accepted once enrolled in the program. You are assigned a student with whom you work as long as they remain in the program.

Pros:

1) Prices are discounted by 2/3 or more compared to what you would pay a dentist.

2) Level of care is high, contributing to "con" #1. Students and faculty spend a great deal of time with you and strict protocols are (being a dentistry school) established and followed.

3) Work done is professional and thorough

Cons:

1) Because of strict teaching protocols, number of return visits are increased as are associated out-of-pocket expenses for (unnecessary?) procedures. If traveling any distance (we live 45 minutes away), these extra visits could be a LIMFAC (limiting factor).

2) Difficult to get a first appointment and student/school schedules severely limit when you can be seen (9am or 1pm only, closed during school holidays, etc.).

With the ridiculous costs associated with medical and dental care in this country, I would say that the pros outweigh the cons. For example, when I was in India last year I was quoted $125 for a new crown whereas I paid $400 at UMKC compared to $1500+ at a regular dentist.
